Animal Services Cage 234

Something about his eyes, with that downward
cast and brown creases rubbing together, made
me step a little closer to the cage and place a hand
between the wires. We say that stories must be told
with the tongue or pen, yet his eyes were filled to
the brim with a raw, dripping desire to be loved and
a greater desire to be heard. I have been told that
larger eyes beg human sympathy. It is hard-wired
in us to draw closer to wanting looks and teary
glances, perhaps because we connect more.
But sometimes I think it's because when we look
into the eyes of an animal we see just how much
more soul they have than we do.
