The Killing Pill

Your drug is your cure
but it is also killing you,
It feels real nice cradled
in your hands, weighted,
a protectorate in this
overdramatic environment
that we call the U.S.
You ingest it slowly,
in little clips at first with
attractive women painted
on the barrel and a little edge
of fear that keeps you
coming back for more,
You grow complacent and
see the number of addicts
increasing but this one is
legal though and it will be fine,
it’s meant to do well,
it will cure the problem,
it will give us the illusion of
safety within our homes,
And it really is the U.S. versus
THEM, us against the world,
their ideas can’t possibly be
valid in healthcare nor gun
control, because who needs
any of those overrated ideas?
They don’t really work anyway,
let’s just keep doing what we’re
doing, clearly it’s “worked” for over
two hundred years,
it must be right, it helps the rich.
“Isn’t murder illegal?” was a response
given when I brought up gun control,
yes, you are right, and yet it happens,
I know, but clearly making it illegal isn’t
enough, ask Pulse, ask Parkland, the
list goes on,
We don’t have to arm them ourselves
though, make it less accessible, people
argue this won’t work,
then how is it working for the rest of the world?
We can ban machine guns too and attempt
to keep them out of the hands of the insane,
out of the hands of the racists, out of the
hands of anyone really unless they’re a
trained military solider defending our rights
which currently, arrogantly includes the right
to kill each other in cold blood,
We are all so afraid, and we arm that fear
with weapons, which turns a simple
conversation into a blood bath, which
keeps the fear tactics coming, in this
dystopian world that we live in where
we believe that more drugs will cure
an addiction, that feeding the fear helps,
that maybe the best answer
is to just fight fire with more fire, to
shoot up all of the people who have guns
and mean to do harm,
and yet, if we want to do harm to them,
doesn’t that make them US?
The drug is not the cure.
