The Butterfly Wing

A broken wing rests on the gravel

beside a box of chrysalis that stands

several feet above the ground,

walkers by barely glance that far

down beneath the brush, it was

doomed to that fate by a reckless

child who upon rushing to see

another prettier butterfly,

unwittingly trampled another,

the sister cringing and shouting,

gingerly pushing the crumpled

stripped black and white

living flower underneath

the bush and away from her

watering eyes.
